100% CPU after Windows Update?

B

Ben Blackmore

Hi,

We run a SUS server, which updates every PC running Windows 2000 every
monday morning. This morning it seemed to run ok, however 1 user has
reported a slow PC. After looking at it, it appears to be running 100% cpu
utilisation. There doesn't seem to be any applications in task manager
hogging the processor. I've ended all no essensial tasks, but still its
100%. This even happens when you go into safe mode. It takes maybe 15
minutes from when it goes into Windows, to it displaying the logon prompt,
then another 15 minutes for it to go from logon promt to loading
explorer.exe.
Its an IBM netvista, 1.2ghz 256mb ram, 20gb hard disk!

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

Ben

search this group and .security for info about update 835732 (i think thats
the one) or for 100% cpu use in the last week and you should get lots of
hits... this is apparently a common problem, some workarounds have been
suggested i think also.

Hi Dave,

was back up and running perfectly!

....and now that SASSER is on the loose, what can you do to secure your MS
box?

Craig,

MS have a fix for W2K machines. See 841382 in KB.

I fixed this problem on a box exhibiting the same symptoms.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 841382 says,
The security update that is described in Microsoft Security Bulletin
MS04-011 contains an issue that causes Microsoft Windows 2000 to try
repeatedly to load drivers that do not load successfully.

I used the Hardware Device Manager and Event Viewer to troubleshoot,
fix, and get the MS patch to install without the slowdown.

Used the device manager to update drivers and/or remove drivers for
items with the yellow "?". I also had some remnants of an old video
driver prior to hardware upgrade. Also had a driver for com2, but
device had been disabled via system BIOS config.

Used Event viewer to get system to the point where it makes a "clean"
boot (no errors in the System or Application logs). It helps to clear
the logs prior to reboots.

With the system booting clean, installed the MS patch, and it works
fine now, with no slowdown (actually a bit faster since the real
problem is fixed)

Hope this helps.
