1 Unread Mail Message

I'm not sure if this is some kind of virus, but every time I turn the
computer on the above message is next to my login name, even though I have no
unread messages and I also don't actually run email from my pc.

Can anyone confirm what may be causing this?
 
Did you ever open outlook express? It's probably talking about that one
email that says "Welcome to blah blah blah".

Just open outlook express and delete it.

Install TweakUI:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

TweakUI > Logon > Unread Mail > Show unread mail on Welcome Screen >
untick.
