1 min and 30+ seconds to boot

My friend has a computer, running XP, that takes 1 min
30+ sec to start (boot). I've used msconfig to stop all
startup files from loading with no improvement. I've
installed a 3rd party start up monitor and found out that
there are 5 or 6 windows files that are taking 16, 17, 20
seconds to load. This does not happen on any of my
computers. They start up in 30 seconds or less. I've also
tried re-installing windows over the old installation
with no improvement. I have also tried installing MS
bootvis, but get an error telling me something to the
effect that the program cannot load because it cannot
find the entry point in advpi32.dll. Lastly I've tried
many registry cleaners to optimize the registry which has
no effect either. Are there anyother strategies that I
can try to troubleshoot this issue and improve start up
times?
thanks,
stan

What is the computer clock speed? Is it the same as yours? How much memory
does the computer have? Same as yours? How big is the page file?

the processor is an intel 1.8 ghz (the same as mine)with
512 ram and I don't remember the current exact size of
the page file, but at one time I changed it to 1000mb
with no effect to the system so I went back to the
windows managed size.
Two other things that may be important is 1)that it is a
Gatway system, mine I put together myself and 2) their
computer has 5 different users (accounts) and mine is a
single user although I believe that these items should
not effect start-up time. If there is not a manual fix to
this problem are there any software programs out there
that may help?

Thanks

Are you sure about that? My 19 month old Dell has half as much memory and
boots in less than 40 seconds. It could be even faster than that, but I have
to sit with my fingers drumming while NAV and ZAP load.

Hey Stan..I just checked mine..I have an AMD 2000+ with a gig of memory
running xp pro..Takes 1 minute to get to the profile screen and 30 seconds
more to have everything completely loaded (No Hour glass) Mine is a home
built machine..So I think 1 min 30 sec is ok...

I am running a P4 1.8 with XP and 256 mem and mine is up
and ready to go in about 30 sec. My friend and I are
running basically the same system except for hers is a
Gateway running 512 mem and mine was home built. The
other thing is that I went through msconfig and disabled
ALL of her start up programs and the boot was still 1 min
30 sec. This tells me that essentially windows is the
culprit and there must be some file loading issues due to
file corruption for one reason or another, that are not
causing any errors, maybe timers? I also tried to
reinstall windows over her current copy with no change
telling me that the settings causing this slow boot must
not have been overwritten, but can they may be able to be
changed. There are no virus's present, Norton scan, and I
would be like to be able to fix the system rather than
wipe it out and start over.

Any suggestions? ideas? big hammers?

Thanks to all for your responses,
Stan

Some computers indeed have a timer which can be set in the registry. My
computer has one. I set the time for a delay to allow me to choose the type of
bootup I want to do. IE safemode, start from a known good startup, go to BIOS
etc. To override the timer, I just hit the enter key. I suggest you check for
that. Also it may help to time the segments. IE. From power on till logon
screen appears, from logging on till up and running etc. One other thing
depending on the computer, what diagnostics are being run at power up. Are you
running a simple memory test or a very complex/complete memory test? Are you
running Disk Cleanup when powering on?

The Bios portion of the start-up is prety quick <10sec.
Simple memory checks are being performed and to my
recollection disk cleanup is not being run.
Once we hit the blue screen the system slows down
significantly. I installed a start up monitor that tells
us how long it takes each file to load and last time I
looked they took in the neighborhood of 15 to 17 sec
each. I don't remember exactly which files they were, but
they were windows files that were required for start-up.
I thank you for your suggestions and will investigate
them to see if I can make any more headway.
Thanks
Stan
