hi,
i have an 4 yr old dell dimension 2400 with windows xp installed;
i had repair about a year ago when i spent 200/- as the windows was not
booting;
now i have a similar problem--windows starts to loas, i get the green scroll
for a few sec and then the whole screen goes blank (grey); i stubbornly
waited after several attempts to restart, and in about 30 min, windows seems
to log on...takes another 20 min for desktop icons to appear. do not see the
start button (one on keyboard also does not work), no task bar; mcafee is
disabled and cannot be opened, spyware doctor is disabled and cannot be
enabled.
i think there is a deadly virus that infected my comp....
pls help... what can i do

What you could try is a System Restore from Safe Mode. Next time
booting up tap F8 until you get a menu. From the menu select Safe Mode. If
your computer boots Ok in safe
mode then go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System
Restore. Just follow the instructions. This is a fairly simple procedure.
Go back in time as far as you can.

Try safe-mode (tap F8 key on pc start),enter xp as administrator, open
event viewer & see what problem(s) the OS has..Also,if you can open
recovery console, type: Fixboot type: CHKDSK C: /R Type: EXIT When thru,
let xp start-up..

What does work?

Can you access safe mode?

Try Last Known Good Configuration?
A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/en-us

In normal mode try selecting Ctrl+Alt+Del to load Task Manager. Also try
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Do either work?

Can you access and read Event Viewer reports? What Warnings and Errors
appear in the System log?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. This normal route would seem to
be closed unless the Start button is visible in Safe mode. If Task
Manager is accessible select File, New Task ( Run ) and enter
"eventvwr.msc" without quotes and hit the ENTER key..

What would be sensible would be to run Malwarebytes if you can work out
a way to do it.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
1.36 -freeware (if you upgrade you pay).
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Run Malwarebytes' and turn off your current anti-virus
before you do to avoid a conflict. Disregard the invitation on the web
site regarding the Registry Optimiser -a Registry Optimiser is not a
helpful utility.

Does the computer have a floppy drive, which can be accessed? You can
run some anti-virus software from a floppy.

What you can do depends on what still works?

Are there important data files on the computer you have not backed up
and need to recover? If not reformatting the drive and clean installing
Windows XP may be the simplest way forward.

Hope this helps.

This can be because an overheated System or a dying Hard Drive!
Log into Safe Mode and peform a System Restore by going to Start >> All
Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore and Pick up a systm
restore that been created bfore the slow down happened.

Also try to run a thorough scan for both malware and viruses on this
machine. If that not your cupa of tea take it to the Professional to repair
it for you.
