"1: Failed to install ISKernel Files" installers crashing ...

I have been having a difficult problem with my XP of late.

I've been trying to install the new line of Macromedia products (version 8)
after uninstalling my version 7. However, all install files (Flash,
Dreamweaver, Firewords) are giving me the error:

"1: Failed to install ISKernel Files
Make sure you have appropriate privileges on this machine."

I get this logged in as Administrator or a regular user. I have no problems
with other programs. I can stil. run old Macromedia installations fine (also
InstallShield) with no issues.

I figured updating my InstallShield might help, so found the Installshield
Update guide here:
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108322

However, right-clicking on my Macromedia v8 install files gives me an
installer version 4.0.100.1190 and no instructions are provided in the above
document for updating a version 4 InstallShield (if that is any way
necessary).

I found one post on a different forum where someone had luck resolving
something like this with a fresh xp install. However, I can't afford the time
that would take right now, so I'm really hoping someone may know what is
going on and will be kind enough to help out.

Thanks,
Mike

For archival purposes:

Repair of XP from original CD + re-install of Service Pack 1 corrected the
problem. Upon then attempting installation of v8 programs, I was prompted to
update my Windows Installer, and this did it fine.
