The best for the two (legal) needs above is Nero in my book.
You can download Nero 6 Ultra Demo here: http://www.nero.com/us/index.html
All features work but are limited in time (I believe it's 60 days) then
program will not work unless you purchase it.

This was my next question, but I need to have a burner which will allow me
to drag to disc, or copy directly to the disc without going to a window
where the files to be burnt are temporarily 'stored'. I used to use EasyCD
v.3 but this won't work on XP. I've tried Nero but this doesn't seem to have
the facility I want. Any ideas?

Thanks

With Nero, you have to download and install the InCD program. Don't buy
Creator 7 if you have a dial-up connection, the last update was around 50MB.

Nero or Roxio. I use both, and the both do a lot more than just burn disks.

CloneCD

Yes, I've done that, but I still don't have a drag-to-disk facility. When I
drag a file it ends up in another window from where I have to give
instructions to burn it.
This is a pain when with my old W98 and EasyCD I could just drag what I
wanted no problem.

Sure. Actually I'm on broadband, fortunately.

Nero is one of the best these days. To copy "copy protected" cds tho you
might have to use CloneCD which copies bit-by-bit. I'm a firm believer
that anybody who buys a $50 or $75 cd should be able to make a backup
copy of it. I've run over lots of CDs with my chair for example :)

Well if you didn't use them to level the desk you wouldn't have that
problem...LOL

I remember my Dad used to use matchbook covers for all sorts of home
tweaks, like picking his teeth, leveling off a table, smoothing out
spackling when filling nail holes in the wall before painting, using as
a wedge to fix a rattling window, killing spiders, and my favourite,
using a small red piece on a fishing hook to catch frogs in ponds for
bait.

I hope he did all those other things BEFORE he used it to pick his teeth!
lol

That depends on what you want it for. I got a copy and it won't do what I
want - I assumed it did. My old EasyCD did, but that won't work on XP.
