Hello group, I have a problem with my Windows XP system that perhaps
others know about. The number "1" appears, seemingly randomly, without
typing it in a number of my applications (Word, Explorer, etc.). It is
really a bother since I need to check my Word documents carefully for
the presence of "1" where my cursor once was. Does anyone know about
this problem. Thank you, John

Try a different keyboard. If that solves the problem, discard the original
keyboard.

Try a different keyboard.
See if the problem continues.

If Num LOck is on, turn off and see if it changes from "1" to forcing "End"
on lines. If it does, new keyboard time.

What happens if you hold the Shift key down, do you get a "!".

Thanks group. I will try using a different keyboard. I am not sure
how difficult it is to change keyboards on a laptop. Perhaps plugging
in a USB external keyboard would help to identify the problem as well.
Thanks again for the suggestions. I was just worried that this might
be a symptom of spyware, etc.

This is why it is important to give *all* information about the machine
in the *first* post. If I had known you had a laptop, I'd have told you
to contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support for replacement of the
keyboard. So I'm telling you that now. It is pretty easy to replace the
keyboard on most laptops. It is very unlikely that this is caused by
software (malware, viruses).
