Alex, next startup Tap F8 until you get a Menu. Try Safe Mode. If
computer boots in Safe Mode do a System Restore. Start>All
programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Chances are good that you will not be able to boot in Safe Mode
either.

The easiest and most promising outcome will result by running chkdsk /
r on the afflicted drive from the Recovery Console.

If you do not have Recovery Console as a boot option (why not?) and
cannot come up with a bootable XP installation CD, you can create a
bootable CD that is just the XP Recovery Console quite easily. You
just need hardware that can burn a CD and a couple free downloads.
How about the computer you are using now?

That CD will include all the Recovery Console commands, including
chkdsk. A very handy thing to have stashed away.

0xC000009C, or STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR, is generally due to bad blocks
(sectors) on the hard disk.

What is your computer make and model.

Do you have important data you need to recover?

Try Last Known Good Configuration?

The solution if you gain access may be to run chkdsk but you should do
this until you have recovered your data files.
