Yamaha midi-mapping under XP

Under Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, ME and NT you used to be able to change the
mapping of a midi-instrument with either a tab in the device manager or by
using a program named IDFedit.exe and creating an .idf file. Some of the
Yamaha keyboards (a PSR-85, for instance) do not use the standard GM voice
patches, so it is necessary when trying to play a midi file out to a Yamaha
to change the voices for each channel. For example, a Piano3 voice
instruction may wind up being played on the Yamaha keyboard as an Oboe. I
can not find any .idf file anywhere in XP so I assume that Microsoft changed
the methodology of doing these changes. It may be that you can only do that
now in XP via software like Cakewalk, but that never used to be necessary.
You could just re-map the voice number used by General Midi to the different,
but matching voice number employed by Yamaha for the keyboard being played
and get the desired results. Is there still a way to do this in XP without
having to buy additional software?

Thanks so much for replying. I have MIDI-OX, but it's so complete that it's
confusing. I guess I will eventually figure it out. What I was hoping to
find was a simple feature within XP, like the previous versions of Windows,
but I've had no luck. I'm surprised that other Windows users aren't barking
at Microsoft for eliminating this tool. You used to be able to open Device
Manager and there was a tab for MIDI. When you clicked on it it provided an
option called MIDI-MAPPER. Even Windows 95, 98, etc. still had the program
IDFedit.exe which is a very simple way of mapping GM over into another
