XP's Choose Details

E

Edwards, Martin

All,

I am not able to add Keywords via View > Choose Details within Windows
Explorer. However, on another PC it works fine. Doesn't seem to matter
whether SP1 or SP2 - is it a specific patch that adds this functionality?
Have gone through all the folder options.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Martin:

I couldn't find information on how to make "Keywords" appear as a field in
the "Choose Details" dialog box; however, I did discover an article that
suggests it is not one of the default fields:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q310297

In the article, "Keywords" is not in the list of "Available Column
Settings". The field might be added by another Microsoft application,
particularly one that makes deep changes to the system, such as Microsoft
Office, or Windows Media Player. You may want to compare which Microsoft
applications are installed on each machine to pinpoint one that may be adding
this field.

Sorry to give you a troubleshooting strategy rather than a solution. I hope
this helps.

Regards,
Rob

I suspect that the system that it "works fine on" has a third party add-on
of some sort. However this is not a Microsoft patch that I know about. Can
you be a bit more specific? What "Keywords" are you referring to and how to
you activate them on that other PC?

Thanks

Martin,

I _think_, the additional column "Keyword" is added when installing Adobe
Acrobat Reader.

Harry, I hope you don't mind me jumping in, but when you're in Windows
Explorer and you choose View > Choose Details, you get a list of fields you
can add to the Details view. On my machine, one of the fields is called
"Keywords". I'm interpreting that on one of Martin's machines, "Keywords"
does not appear in the list of fields.

I'm not sure if third-party programs can add items to this list – I couldn't
find any items in the registry that define this list – but it's certainly
something to consider. I suggest that Martin look at other Microsoft
applications first.

Rob

Well I have XP Home SP1 on my machine at work with Office 2000 (Outlook
2003) and Acrobat reader 5.1. "Keywords" is definitely missing from the
Details box. I'll have a look at my home machine which has Office 2003 on XP
Pro SP2 and the latest Acrobat Reader (7?) when I get home......

Ramesh is correct: The "Keywords" field is added to the "Choose Details"
dialog box of Windows Explorer by Adobe Reader 7. I looked at a second
Windows XP machine that didn't have Adobe Reader 7 installed and the field
was missing; after installing Adobe Reader 7, the field appeared at the
bottom of the list (after closing and reopening Windows Explorer).

I have 2 boxes both with XP Pro with SP2 one without Acrobat 7 on it. That
one does not have the keyword field nor does it have Office installed. The
other box has both Office 2003 and Acrobat installed, it does have the
keyword field. I will install acrobat on the other one and see what happens.

All,

I haven't been connected for a couple of days, so have just read through the
posts - I will install Acrobat 7 inside a VM build although am confident
it'll add the option.

Many thanks for the response.

Martin
