XP takes a long time switching directory's

My mother has a problem with her Windows XP, when using Windows Explorer and
I click on the plus sign to expand My Computer, it takes about 3-5 mins. to
open. It does the same when I want to save a file to disk (when in any
program; Word, Excel, and so on)

I've tried using Norton Antivirus to see if she has a virus, but it doesn't
find anything (and yes it is updated). I've tried AdAware, Spy Sweeper and
other ad ware type softwares, but nothing fixes the problem.

I've tried alt-ctrl-del to see what else is running in the background, but
that doesn't tell me anything.

As for memory, she has 224 MB of RAM (more then enough to run Windows XP
Home Edition) 1.2 GHz Intel Celeron processor.

Anybody got any ideas on what's the problem and how to fix it?

In options of Norton Antivirus, uncheck the scan Microsoft Office files,
that is whats causing the lag time to open and save files in Office
applications.
