Logging off takes long time

Can anybody explain a way to make my pc log off more quickly? Started a
couple months ago - takes a couple minutes to log off when it used to be
immediate.

I run XP Pro, 4GB RAM, have all updates, already ran spyware cleaner (found
nothing), and haven't installed anything new. Sometimes it also takes a
couple minutes to open a file, even a small jpg. Everything else works
fine...any ideas?

I recommend you install the user profile hive cleanup service:

About the general sluggishness of your PC: Run msconfig.exe and have a look
at the items under the Startup tab. You can safely disable all of them with
the exception of your virus scanner and firewall. If you disable an item too
many then you might lose some functionality in your third-party
applications. If so then you can go back and re-enable it.

I took the advice and tried both ideas. Then rebooted, only to have things
still work exactly the same. I thought I'd mention that when I go to Start
-> Log Off, it takes a couple minutes before it even appears to start the log
off process, it just freezes everything for a minute, then begins to log off.
Then at that point, the log off process takes a couple more minutes.

Thought that explanation might make a difference. Any other ideas?
Registry changes? I'd hate to reinstall XP just for this!

Thanks again.

I wanted to try this also. I've installed it. Now what? It's not on my list
of programs to run or does it automatically do something?

Check your System & Application Event Logs. It's a very common
issue for processes/'Services' to hang at shutdown. XP by default is
configured to wait up to 30-Seconds for a process to close.

Click Start, Run (type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]
Expand each log and check for Errors and Warnings.
*Some programs ( Norton crap'ola will frequently cause this issue )

Some Virus scanners and firewalls (not mentioning any names . . .) can be
very heavy on the CPU. I would now take the following two steps:

1. Physically disconnect the PC from the Internet, then use msconfig.exe to
disable your virus scanner and third-party firewall.

2. Run msconfig.exe, then click the Services tab. Tick the box that hides
all Microsoft services, then untick the remaining services. Any improvement
after the next reboot?

Do not reconnect the Internet until you have restarted your virus scanner /
firewall.

Are you running Zone Alarm? There was an issue with early releases of
version 8 running on XP. It was fixed in the later revisions, though.
