Unexplained delay in opening documents sometimes

T

Tachyon

One PC here sometimes takes a minute to open any local document - whether a
..doc, .htm or .mht. MS word or IE itself still takes two seconds to open but
selecting any local document with either seems to freeze them for a while.
These freezes occur with no forewarning and go away if the machine is
rebooted or a log-off-log-on done.

This happens with other types too - PDF, Publisher files .... the only
exceptions seem to be media and text files. I cannot trace this to any event
but started about a couple of weeks ago.

Running Windows XP Pro SP 2 with all updates installed. No software (or
hardware) changes made on this machine for over a month. Checked the AV
status (using AntiVir) and ran checks with SpyBot as well as AdAware. Also
ran chkdsk /r and sfc/ scannow. Nothing helped.

I don't know if this is related but this is on a PC that recently lost the
ability to search from the IE Location Bar. That was restored using the
SearchHook reg-fix from Kelly's Korner.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Regards and thanks.

Somewhat unusual that I have the same problem with this configuration.

"Also, I wanted to mention that (I am dual booting XP Pro SP2 and
Vista
Ultimate on the same PC) the same delays with the same files happen
under Vista."

Any resolution?

For starters, it would have helped if you included enough of the prior
post to understand exactly what YOUR problem is. Reading your post
doesn't make any sense by itself, does it?

The title of the post is the problem.
satam states in his second post that he is dual booting XP with Vista
Ultimate.
I posted that I am having the same problem with the same
configuration.
If that isn't clear to you, whoever you are, you shouldn't be analyzing
any trouble threads.

Jumping in as a "Me too" to someone else's issue isn't the way to post
YOUR problem. It wasn't clear. Learn how to properly post. Start a
new thread and don't remove all the prior text.

You didn't notice that I asked if there was any resolution.
Rather ludicrous to start another post with the same heading.
Please don't bother replying.
This is my first and last post on this forum.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Not using that "forum" is really a good idea, as you aren't actually at
the real location of the information, but in a web interface, attempting
to look at the real newsgroup contents. If you want the real group use

My fault for not looking closer.
All I saw was someone posting to the same problem I'm having.
I'm already a registered xp newsgroup user and contributer.
All I had done was Googled my problem and was led here.
Thank you, Bob, for pointing out my error.
The prior poster tried but flaming remarks tend to lead us elsewhere.

I wasn't "flaming" you. I was trying to get you to understand how you're
supposed to post. Sorry if you took it any other way.
