Deleting files takes forever and a day

What could cause all file operations involving file deletion to
suddenly takes incredibly long???
Deleting a file easily takes 2 minutes. Deleting a folder with two
small files (couple of kBytes each) in it takes >2 minutes. Emptying
the waste-bin takes 15-30 minutes!

This is on XP (with SP1 and all current fixes installed) suign NTFS,
the HW is a 1.7GHz laptop with 1GB RAM and >5GB disk space still free.

What could cause this strange hickup?

Delays in deleting files are primarily caused by LOCATION of files and fragments.
Your system has probably not been defragged/optimized in quite some time.
Clean your harddrive first by deleting cookies/on and offline temporary interne
files and contents, disk cleanup, and defrag it at least twice to ge
all the fragments into place.
Deleting/cleanup: Start/All Programs/accessories/disk cleanu
Cookies/internet files: Open IE (Internet Explorer)/tools/internet options/delete button
History: Clear History and reset to no more than 3 days/Apply and O
Good luck and happy putering

Well, yeah, but suddenly such a slowdown, i.e. 30 seconds to delete a
file, 2 minuytes to delete a folder? And no (visible) activity in task
manager. So I am still wondering what could cause this?

Anyway, this strange "effect" has disappeared in the meantime. I hope
it won't return....

I always thought, NTFS doesn't need to be defragmented any more?!? Or
does it?

Maybe it doesn't "need" to be defragged, but it sure makes a difference
after you do it.
