Problem deleting files

I've been having trouble deleting files on my C drive for
the last couple of days. A 5mb file takes approximately
three-five minutes to delete, and I can hear my hard drive
clicking and grinding while it's deleting. I have
approximately one quarter of the drive free, and have
defragmented the drive and am not seeing any change.
Programs that automatically create temp files while they're
running and then delete them when they close take forever
to shut down... any idea what's going on? I've also run
CHKDSK and my virus program and it says my system's clean.

R U running out of free space on the hd ?
Is your swap file enabled and set so that Windows can enlarge it, if it
needs to do so?
