XP SP2 re: Q308402

I have been going in circles attempting to fix the logon for the
windows recovery console. After researching the hotfix to Q308402 it
seems to lead me to SP1 or SP1a. There doesn't seem to be a
downloadable hotfix just for the single problem. I already have SP1
installed and all the post SP1 corrections

I refuse to reinstall XP just to fix the recovery console; I've put
too much time into my present installation with updates and tweaks.

Those that are beta testing SP2... do you know if something in SP2
fixes the recovery console problem described in Q308402? Should I
give up in ever trying to fix this problem... the help desk techs at
Dell know less about fixing my computer then I do! If anyone has some
inside connections within Microsoft I would appreciate your help.

Read the article again and see point 3. in the Resolution section. there is
a fix for Q308402 you need to contact Microsoft PSS for it.

Since Dell installed my OS I have an OEM version. Unless I call MS at
a fee the information leads me to Dell. Those people at Dell are
cluless!
If I call MS and risk having to pay do you know of a specific hotfix
that they will supply me? I hate paying MS for something seemingly
caused by Dell. I normally try to fix problems myself.

If the fix corrects your problem, Microsoft is not going to charge you
for it, just as the information in the article states.

Please read the article again.

You will see the following AGAIN in Section 3 of the Resolution section

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the
specific update in question.

So if you have the problem and the fix will fix it then you will probably
not have to pay.

Please read the article completely and thoroughly.

If you call MS support, and say you need the QFE fix
for 308402 you will not be charged as it is a known
error in the product that is impacting you.
You will receive an email with download details.

However, as this fix is included in SP1 and you do
indicate that you are at SP1, it is possible that this
is not a fix for your specific problem. Also, this fix
may, as many do, refuse to install when it sees the
wrong prerequisites because SP1 is present.

Have you tried reinstalling cmdcons ?
