| does anyone have any accurate information as to when xp SP2 will be
| released?
|
| i find it astounding that a company such as microsoft has spent so long
| since SP1, and yet released SOOOOOO many hotfixes (which clog up the
| installed programs details) without just releasing SP2 to clean it all up
| earlier than the mid-2004 expected release date (which is the latest
| information I have seen about it)
|
| win2000 has had 4 SP's so far, so surely the number of SP's released is
| really immaterial. Once enough hotfixes and breaches have been identified
| and released, then surely releaseing a complete SP would be more beneficial
| to customers and Microsoft alike.
|
| Why should i have to pay repeatedly for failed d/l's (thru dial up) for
| hotfixes for an OS i have paid good money for, when they could simply
| release SP2 for distribution on CD's thru common outlets, such as
| newsagents, etc

It will be awhile, it is currently being beta tested but at a relatively
early stage.

No, no-one has. There are only estimates. The beta is about to
begin, and the release is probably about six months off.

We will release SP2 when it has been through a full testing cycle to ensure
the quality and stability of this major release.
We did a roll-up package a while ago that rolls up a number of the currently
available hotfixes etc.

However SP2 is much more then a roll-up of hotfixes, so we have to do
significantly more testing on the product.
You can see how much more is in SP2 if you have a look at this document
available for download

Read all about the SP2 beta release and view several screenshots and there
may be a download link in there somewhere.

Before anyone screams I must mention the mandatory and boring disclaimer
that beta software is not intended for everyday use especially if you have
only one PC and / or are not willing to format and start over.

Some folks love to do this stuff so good for them...I don't but this site is
a great one for keeping up with computing news both PC and Mac

Tells you right on the front page that there will be no download links and
not to bother asking for one :)

It is Neowin's policy to not have download links to betas, as they have had
loads of problems before when giving links to unsupported Microsoft
products. Including entire deletion of their website.

Not on their site perhaps, but there will be plenty of places the SP2 beta will
be available if somebody wants to risk using it. I'll pass, though, since I'd
rather wait until the official release when at least a few of the bugs will have
been weeded out — hopefully ALL the major ones!

And it is Microsoft that drives that policy since SP2 is Microsoft
property and anyone distributing it without Microsoft authorization is
essentially dealing in stolen property (piracy)
