XP Reinstallation

When installing Windows XP (upgrade) on a new hard drive, I am asked to
insert the original Windows (Me) setup disk. When I put in the Dell
Millenium re-install disk, the XP installer can't read the disk and
therefore cannot confirm a prior windows installation. WIthout this
confirmation I cannot continue with the XP insatllation. Is there a way to
by-pass this or to get the installer to recognize this Dell provided disk?
Thanks.

Try talking to dell. They will probably tell you you need a full version of
Windows XP instead of an upgrade.

Is this Me CD a restore CD, not an installation CD? If so, you
don't have the CD it's asking for and you can't just do that.

You can also do a clean install if you have an OEM restore CD of
a previous qualifying version. It's more complicated, but it
*can* be done. First restore from the Restore CD. Then run the XP
upgrade CD from within that restored system, and change from
Upgrade to New Install. When it asks where, press Esc to delete
the partition and start over.
