Dell XP Reinstallation CD Question

D

DBCooper

I have a Dell desktop that came loaded with Windows XP Home edition, and a
reinstallation cd.

If I want to install a new hard drive, I suppose this cd won't install XP.

Or, if my current hard drive crashes, I suppose I'm also out of luck.

Is this true?

TIA

You can use the Dell Reinstallation CD
on a new hard drive without encountering
any issues.

He will have to activate it though, unless he has the Dell
hidden partition.

Jim;
I was thinking the same thing.
He must have squandered the $ since he apparently does not have an IT
department at his service.

Most people never heard of the FIRST airplane hijacking for
money in modern times.

I understood that besides the BIOS, there are files in the
hidden 32 MB FAT32 partition that are needed for the Dell
software to install. I could be wrong though, sure have
been before. I'd bet Dell could tell him.

| I don't think so, It is bios locked and as long as it is
used on a
| recognized bios, activation shouldn't be triggered.

Jim;
Back before airport security.
At a time when hijackings to Cuba almost always meant no one was hurt.

That machine will have its activation handled by a different method, by
'BIOS locing' to the motherboard. As long as the motherboard is
untouched you can change anything else freely and simply use the Dell CD

Alex,
That is my understanding also. As long as the bios is recoginized during
setup activation is not triggered.

Actually, I've invested well, but still have to lay low.

Playboy magazine had a fiction story, thirty years ago,
about an airline crew that faked a hijacking, selected a
lone passenger as they "perp" and when they unloaded all the
other passengers they kept the money and threw the body of
the true victim out the door with some of the money and a
bad parachute.

I actual read Playboy for some of the articles, I of course
bought it for the centerfold.

Alex,
That is my understanding also. As long as the bios is recoginized
during setup activation is not triggered.

That is my intent, to use the same machine (motherboard). The current
hd is 60gb and has the original XP Home edition that was installed by
Dell. I've kept it updated with security patches and SP2, etc. I
bought a 160gb Seagate hd, and was going to image it from the 60gb, and
swap it as my primary, but then thought about simply installing the
160gb hd as primary and doing a clean install from the Dell
reinstallation cd, applying SP2 from Microsoft's cd, and setting the
original 60gb hd on the shelf (or as a slave).

That way, if for any reason I had problems with the configuration of my
applications or drivers on the new hd, I could just put the original
60gb hd back on the primary until I got things figured out.

I will also check with Dell, but you guys are the first place I come to
for information. If I find something different, I'll report back.

bios? wopper

Hi

It is only the BIOS that matter, no HD content is checked...

as long as the HARD drive is INSTALLED on the DELL it will work

Unless the CD relies on a hidden partition on the original drive (not
uncommon). When that drive is removed, the CD becomes worthless.

No it doesn't, the hard drive used has nothing to do with the CD. It is the
BIOS that matters and if the CD is used on a non-Dell system it will trigger
the need to activate.
