OS Upgrade (98 to XP Pro) results in Outlook Express error

After upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP Pro, I select the 'Create
Mail' button from OutLook Express and get the following message: The
feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk
that is not available. Insert the 'Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Small
Business disk and click OK.

I insert the proper disk, select OK and get the following message: The
path 'Microsoft Office 200 Small Business' cannot be found. Verify that
you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the
installation package 'Data1.msi' in a folder from which you can install
the product Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Small Business.

Upon reviewing the CDROM on d:\ drive, the file 'data1.msi' is at the
root location. It looks like both Outlook Express and Outlook are both
affected by the OS upgrade. Any suggestions for a fix would be
appreciated. I attempted to run the installation from the disk only to
get the following message: Windows Installer - Another version of this
product is already installed. Installation of this versino cannot
continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product,
use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.

I also upgraded XP with the latest Updates. This might have crashed OE
as well. I didn't get a chance to test OE prior to the Windows Updates.
One last note: The Outlook program is also affected. It won't even
launch and gives all kinds of errors. My thought is that the latest
updates might have overwritten preexisting Office files and now the OS
thinks that two different MS Office products exist on the same machine.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Outlook Express is installed as part of the IE installation when XP is
installed.

Did you try reinstalling Office 2000 SBE?

Did you upgrade to XP 'over the top' of Windows 98?

Maybe try again, this time, back up all data, then put the XP CD in and
start over with installation - format/partition the hard drive, the
reinstall you application afterwards.
