XP PRO error 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.'

Starting explorer,windors or IE (control panel included) I
get the following error message box:

'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'

Additional info from the error box is:

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: vx2.dll
ModVer: 0.3.1.6 Offset: 00010446

I'm running XP SP1 Pro. with IE SP1. I've rebooted from the
CD and run th repair utility. I'm unable to download/check
for a virus since McAfee attempts to start IE for
communicating.

What are my options?

Try the system file checker tool. Click start, run, and

type in this here; "sfc /scannow" with that space after
the sfc. It will ask for your XP CD to copy any needed
files from, and it runs as "windows file protection". And
if you don't have a XP CD, just borrow one for this.
