XP Hotfix KB828741 vs Norton 2004 conflict

G

Guest

I recently purchased Norton Antivirus 2004 Pro. It will not configure as along as the XP Hotfix 828741 is installed. Norton website says remove Nortons, remove hotfix, reinstall Nortons, reinstall hotfix. I tried to go to Add/Remove programes, but the Remove button is not displayed when the 828741 is selected. How can I get 828741 removed?

Hi,

Please proceed as follows:
1. Click Start -> Run
2. Type "%windir%\$KB828741$" (without quotes) and click OK
3. Open the folder "spuninst" and run the "spuninst.exe" file to uninstall
the Hotfix

To remove the Add/Remove programs listing, open the registry and make the
necessary changes as follows:
============================================================================
=================
This solution involves editing the registry. Please read Microsoft's
warning BEFORE using regedit.
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Note: I suggest you save the registry settings befor making any changes.
First select the branch (eg: HKCU), then from the menu select File ->
Export. Give a name and save the file. To restore boot to safe mode and
double click the file you have saved and reboot the system to normal mode.

Method :
=======
1. Start -> Run
2. In the Run dialog box type "Regedit" and press enter key
3. Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and
delete the subkey for the program to remove it from Add/Remove Programs.
Note: On the right hand pane the "DisplayName" value is the same as what
is displayed on the Add/Remove Programs list.
4. Exit the Registry editor and reboot the system.

Hope this helps ...... :)

I did step 1 and 2. I got a dialog box that said Windows could not find C:\Windows\$KB828741$. I cut and pasted your text without quotes so it was not a mistype. I then did a search for spuninst.exe and found one in the C:\Windows\$xpsp1hfm$\KB828741 directory. When I ran the spuninst file in that directory, a box popped up and said "This program removes Windows XP and restores your previous configuration. To remove Windows XP, click Next". Undaunted by the possibility of not having an operating system, I clicked next. The next box that popped up said something about installed programs not working if I continued. I chickened out at this point and cancelled.

Also, assuming that I can get the thing uninstalled, is is necessary to remove it from the Add/remove programs listing? If I can ever get Nortons installed, I am going to reinstall the hotfix.

Thanks,

I did the restore. I found the spuninst.exe in the KB828741 directory and ran it. After it went through the warnings and checks, a dialog box popped up that said "The handle is invalid". I clicked ok. A box then came up that said "The was not uninstalled". I clicked OK again. Success eludes me.

Also, assuming that I get this uninstalled, is it necessary to edit the registry? Will the hotfix being on the Add/Remove programs listings affect anything?

Thanks.

I have a similar situation, but I show KB828741 in add/remove programs. When
I try to remove it, it fails at copying the files because the files have a
"c" (compressed) attribute. I tried removing the attribute, but no luck.
How do I get the KB828741 uninstalled???

Thanks,
Bob

Hi,

Please see the KB Article # 262841 "Command-Line switches for Windows
software update packages" at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q262841

OR

For example, to remove the 828741 patch in Unattended mode without
restarting your computer, use the following command:
%windir%\$ntuninstallq828741$\spuninst\spuninst.exe /u /z

Note:
====
In this case, you must manually restart your computer to completely remove
the original 828741 security update.

Hope this helps ...... :)
