xp error message

my computer was working fine then, shut it down and when
restarted it got error message stating
Starting Windows...
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows
2000 Setup using the original Setup floppy disk or CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

restarted, put windows cd rom in..got to boot screen,
tried booting from cdrom...nothing...tried reinstalling
windows, nothing.....recovery does not work takes me back
to error screen...can get to starting windows screen,
agreement screen.....but cant go further.....help!

tried rebooting with start up disc i found...said is wrong
disc for system, could delete files if i run.....

To boot from floppy or CD you MUST change the boot sequence to make
the CDROM or Removable Drives higher than the hard disk.
To get to BIOS screen you press a key such as F1, F2 or DEL repeatedly
at startup.
