Wrong Number of CPUs reported

One of my customers has a Compaq Proliant server running Windows 2000
server/sp4 (actually SBS 2000) with one CPU. However, when I open Task
Manager / Performance tab, it is showing two CPUs.

I was puzzled by this when I first saw it but after spending some time
researching it and not finding an answer, I gave up.

This past weekend, the server was upgraded with a second CPU and now the
Task Manager is showing four CPUs installed.

This server has occassional, random crashes and now I am wondering if
Windows actually thinks it has four CPUs available and when it tries to use
the "third" one, it is crashing.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I believe this is normal if you got those new Intel Xeon processors with the
"hyperthreading" technology that kinda "partitions" a processor into two.

Your Proliant Server, is it a P4 Xeon Processor? If yes,
probably because the processor is using hyperthreading
tech. so this is normal you see 2 CPU if you have only 1.
If you had 2 physical CPU's, your Windows will see 4 CPU's
