Won't update

Defender says that it has not been updated for 26 days. When I try to update
it says no updates available

This happened to me as well. I found out that our network uses WSUS for
patch/update management, and as a result, Windows Defender was trying to get
its updates from the WSUS server rather than via the Internet. If you are on
a company/managed network, ask the SysAdmin to enable updates for this
product (it has its own category), and the "Definition Updates" update
classification. Once I did that, it updated just fine.

After reinstalling Defender, I am having the same problem. I removed the
current signature file per kb915105 without success. When I try to update, I
have indication of hard drive and internet activity, but nothing happens. No
messages of any kind. Nothing. I have verified that "Automatic" update is
checked. I have also tried turning off my Kerio firewall. I am a single user
on a home computer running WinXP SP2.

Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Have you gone to Window Update website and tried to download update from
there? That worked for me.

Got it to update! Per a suggestion from another post, I right-clicked on the
"AS_Sigs.msi file in the Windows Defender folder and uninstalled it. The
update process then worked and I got the latest signature file.

Terrific--I really don't expect the update process to be nearly as
troublesome as beta1, but there are some problems getting started on some
machines.

I got all updates the other day and finally got my Windows Defender to
update correctly. But when I rebooted, I rebooted and rebooted and rebooted.
Couldn't even boot into safe mode because my computer was too busy
rebooting. I finally formatted my drive and reinstalled everything. A MSKB
article said it might be the kernel32.dll problem but for now I am through
with updates. I have them turned off.

Good thinking with MS. Cool down and think about it a bit and then decide
what to do..... :)

Yours is the second such post I've read, but since everybody is posting
anonymously, I don't know if they are different people, of course. This
does sound like a disaster, and I'm sorry it happened. However, I would
strongly recommend getting every critical update Microsoft offers. I do
that on every machine I administer, and the number of times that any ill
effect is caused by a security patch is something I can count on two
fingers, dating back to Windows NT 3.1 days.
