won't shut down, log off shows process running

I can't get xp pro to shut down. I was having trouble with live update not
being able to run and tried to reset the system to an earlier date. Even
though there were dates to pick from, when I tried any of them, restore
couldn't restore. After that, the computer won't shut down. I found a way
to get it to by logging of, then at the main "choose" page, I see where there
is still a process running under my login(I am the only one). Task manager
doen't show anything running. Spybot finds nothing, symantecs virus scan on
the web finds nothing wrong, I run zone alarm, popup killer, Norton
systemworks 2003 pro, Microsoft antispyware, ad-aware, and spybot. Live
update still doesn't work but I think that came about as I had to blow out of
symantecs virus scan on the net one day. I am still working on that. Any
help with shutting down will be greatly appreciated!

I fixed it!!! To answer your question, no therer was nothing to tell me what
was running. Task manager said no programs running and the only process
running was explorer. I tried your suggestion but just before doing so, I
made a system restore point. After your suggestion didn't work, I restored
to just before doing so, and that worked! System restore was having the
problem as it didn't have anything to restore to previously. It was hung up!
Thanks for the help! Hope this will help someone else should it happen
again!
