Wired Network with XP

I have followed all the directions and still can not get anything in My
netwok neighborhood. When I "view workgroup computers" it says I might not
have permission to use this service. It is a wired network with only 2
comuters.

Yes the wizard turned on the windows firewall during the set-up. I have
tried to turn it off on both. I also have Norton running. I have both
running to a switch. Do I need a router? Everthing I've read says I don't.
It is just a laptop connecting to a desktop. Both are DELL. The desktop XP
home the laptop XP professional.

Jim,

If you have 2 computers, a NAT router is an absolute necessity. What have you
been reading that says no router is needed? Not a lot here, I'd bet.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/please-protect-yourself-layer-your.html

If you really don't want to use a NAT router (are you paying for 2
connections?), then use IPX/SPX for file sharing. But set IPX/SPX up carefully.

A NAT router is only required if the systems would be connecting to the
Internet. If the two PCs will only be connecting between each other, then a
switch is ok! Jim never stated that these will connect to the Internet.

Right,

I don't need to connect to the internet. All I wanted to do was to connect
the two together to sychronize outlook files. Eventually I might want to get

Jim,

If you're not connected to the Internet, then you don't need a NAT router.
Based upon your problem description so far:
# Two computers.
# Reporting inability to share files.
# You "followed all the directions".
# You cannot get the two computers to see each other in Network Neighborhood.

You did not explicitly say that you don't have Internet service; and the vast
majority of folks asking for help here do have that. Your problem fits a known
scenario which pops up here from time to time - a cable broadband customer
paying for 2 IP addresses, and getting 2 on separate subnets. Since that's not
it, let's move on.

One of the most common causes of your problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall. There are other possibilities too. Norton
antivirus, or Norton antiworm, could indeed be a problem. Read this article
with an open mind.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Jim,

There are no dummies here. All the dummies are outside and don't know where
here is. ;)

Anyway, the good news is that you have Teredo Tunneling aka IPV6 on both
computers. Remove that first, then we'll continue if that doesn't help.

Okay, I got rid of that. When I go to my network places it still doesn't
show anything. Should I run the wizard again? If I "View workgroup

Jim,

Don't bother with the wizard, it's done its job, I think.

Let's work on getting browstat to run, cause it's got information that we need.
# Did you download browstat.exe?
# What folder did you put browstat.exe into?
# Try running "browstat status" from a command window. Do you get an error? If
so, type the complete error as best you can.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html

And Jim, type your answers after mine please.

OK, Jim. That's a start! But I don't think that's a complete "browstat status"
- look at the samples in my article. And that's only a browstat from one
computer (which computer??) - browstat, like ipconfig, is most useful when
compared between computers.

Chuck,

When I run Browstat it flashes a window then goes away. I read the blog and
tried the browstat.txt option but the same thing happens. It does this on
both computers. the only way I got as much as I did was with Status and
copied it before it finished and closed.

I have put the IP address in manually to the connection, because when I let it do it manually it comes up with an error that I have limited or no connection and the internet might not be accessable. Now as I write this i'm thinking is that ok since I don't have a router and only a switch. Remeber that is where we started?

Jim,

You have to expect the message "limited or no connection..." in your case.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/limited-or-no-connectivity.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/limited-or-no-connectivity.html
If both computers are running Windows XP, they will connect fine, with
everything working, using DHCP.

You have a couple interesting issues shown above.
# WAN Miniport
# WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface

How about you post an updated set of "ipconfig /all" from both computers.

<SNIP>

Chuck,

Thak you again, after a good nights sleep and your directions I got is to
work just as you said. Here are the results. First the desktop:

Status for domain HOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{F0CD45AA-F791-4FD6-B0EA-B3B126217A64}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

Now the Lap Top:

Status for domain HOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{7F350A27-E020-479C-A81E-5066C61182D1}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

OK, Jim,

Now we know where we're starting from. Is the Browser Service running on either
computer? Yes on Both computers

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html#NotActive

And check both computers - ensure that all other required components and
services are running. Yes all those needed are running.

If nothing yet, go thru the troubleshooting guide, item by item. Okay,

Chuck,

Yes the browser service is running on both computers and Yes it seems all
the services are running on oth computers. When I run the Network diagnosis
on both I get the network adapters failed

On the Laptop, specifically IPADDRESS = 169.254.229.75 (FAILED)

On the Desktop I get 3 failures:
