winfile from W98SE?

I am having a stubborn file association problem in W2K

In W98SE there was a very handy "winfile" program that fixed those issues.

Can I copy it into my Winnit folder and will it work in W2K?

It works but much easier to use assoc and ftype commands from cmd.exe
session.

Do it from the command line rather than your method.

Not expert, I'm not real good with command lines. May have to later.
Thanks, will try the winfile method.

History on this:
Offline: Normally, I click on a html file and Firefox opens the file and
displays it.
Since 2 days ago, my file associations for *.html and *.htm are not working
properly. Now, I click on the file, nothing. If I open the Context Menu,
Send To- Firefox, it opens the file. I checked and Firefox is still my
default browser.

I checked in Options/File Types, even browsed to my Firefox.exe, it was
right before, surely right now.

I checked in a few file association utils I have, they confirm the
extension points to the exe.

How to fix this?

Was advised to do this:
Left click an HTML file to select it then right click it while
holding down the Shift key. Select "open with" and select Firefox.
Then check "Always use". Then ok.

That worked for *.htm files, but not for the *.html files, even though I
did the same thing.

Winfile is my last attempt, then may have to get serious as you suggest.

Any comment on above?

From a command prompt;

assoc .html
assoc .htm

what does it return with?

A basic question.

In W2K, how do I get to a command prompt?

BTW, winfile from W98 will not work in W2K, it wanted files, then error
messages.

So I have to solve it as above.

Thanks

Start|Run|cmd.exe

Thanks.

-----
C:\>assoc .html
..html=FirefoxHTML.html

C:\>
----

IMO that reads right. In File Types, html points to my Firefox.exe just
like I set it for htm, but for htm it works.

Hence?

I should have also included:
assoc .htm

for some reason I can't copy what I see, but it's identical to what I
posted for the html.

Same path.

Also from a command prompt;

ftype FirefoxHTML.html
-----
'ftype FirefoxHTML.html' is not recognized as an internal or external
command, operable program or batch file
----

I copied directly,

BTW, what is a good way to copy text from that DOS screen, I tried
highlighting and CTRL/C but that didn't put it into clipboard.

1.) If FTYPE command isn't recognized then you may have other problems such
as damaged path statement.

2.) Right-click the title bar of the cmd.exe window, Properties|Options and
check the box for 'QuickEdit Mode' then you can drag over the text and hit
enter. (the text is now on the clipboard)

Thanks.

You mentioned something I should have remembered to say- the reason for
the problem is I ran a cleaner- bad me- that must have removed more than
"empty" registry keys. Never again, I have removed cleaners from my hard
drive.

If needed, I can do some registry editing, cautiously.

Is there a registry key that needs to be checked or modified?

This is the path statement in File Types for html:
"D:\Utilities\Internet\Browsers\Firefox 1.5.0.7\Firefox 1.5.0.7 port
\firefox\firefox 1.5.0.7.exe" %1

This is the path statement for my browser in it's location:
D:\Utilities\Internet\Browsers\Firefox 1.5.0.7\Firefox 1.5.0.7 port
\firefox\firefox 1.5.0.7.exe

They appear identical.
