Hi!
ÃŽ have this problem about windows shuting down. I saw some comments about it
but i still can't shut down properly.

I am running on Windows XP. This problem started a while ago. Whenever I
turn off computuer with the Start menu and then shut down, Window says it is
shutting down but never does. I must shut down the computer manually with
button.
Also someone said to do an update to the bios which i have done...any hint
about these.

You'll need to provide more information about your computer and the
problem then. Did the problem always exist or it is recent? If the
latter, what changed between the time things worked and the time they
didn't?

What is the virus/malware status of the machine? If you think it is
clean, what programs (including versions and status of antivirus
subscription and definitions) did you use to determine this?

What version of Windows and Service Pack level do you have?

What are your computer's hardware specs?

The more descriptive you are, the better-focused answers people can give
you. Here is a link that explains how to write a good newsgroup post.
I'm not saying this to hurt your feelings, but rather to help maximize
your chances of getting useful answers.

What you are describing is likely a software issue. I have
several programs-- including some games -- that do not
remove themselves from RAM cleanly when I get out of the
program/game.

If the program does not leave the RAM clean, the computer
will hang when you try to shut it down.

I can't give you the technical detail on this because I'm
not a technical person.

Easiest way (well, not all that easy) to figure out what's
happening is to uninstall in reverse order the last
half-dozen programs you installed.

After each uninstall, reboot with the Start button on the
desktop.

I have just sidestepped the issue by installing Norton's
GoBack routines, and when I hang I just hit my Reset button.

Problem solved.

You can spend hours or days or weeks trying to "run down" a
problem, or you can take the "shotgun" approach, and 'do
what works 95 % of the time."

That would be the Reset switch.

On a similar level, I used to run to my computer (I'm a
writer) with every idea I had; I'd sit and grow frustrated
waiting for my word processing program to load, and half the
time, I'd forget my idea before I could type it in.

3 solutions.

1 I put a small word processing program on my computer
"Write" (Word 6),and put a shortcut to it on my Quick
Launch.

2 I put a shortcut to XPs "NotePad" on my quick Launch.

3 I keep pens and paper handy.

At times, there simply is no "quicker way" to get something
recorded for posterity than the trusty old quill and
parchment.

Summary:

Why dash to your computer and look for your "Calculator"
icon when there's a computer on your wristwatch? And one in
your wireless phone?

When Windows goes to shut down, it sends a message to all running processes
to end. Each process must return a result to the Windows system. If a
process doesn't returns an incorrect value, Windows stops the shut down.
This is not the fault of Windows but 3rd party software. It just proves
there is some pretty badly programmed software out there.

Sometimes, you can find the offending software through trial and error by
either exiting any system tray apps or ending a process through Task Manager
and try shutting down again. When you discover which one it is, make a
complaint to that company. They may not be aware of the problem.
