Shut down problem

Win XP Professional SP2 lastest updates applied.
When I go to shut down the compute,r START->TURN OFF THE COMPUTER, the
system takes 5 to 10 minutes before STANDBY TURN OFF RSTART screen appears. I
click TUTN OFF and the system will display Windows Is Shuting Down for 5 to
10 plus minutes before shutting down.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem or where I may find some info on
it?
Thanks

I failed to mention that I have rune a virus scan and there were no viruses
found. I get noe messages pertaining to a background program not closing.
When I do a CTRL ALT DELETE there are no applications running.
