Windows XP Takes 10 Minutes to Startup

M

Mario

The past few weeks I have noticed that windows xp is
taking between 5 and 10 minutes to startup. Dos loads
fine then the windows xp logo comes up and the blue bar
moves back and forth. 5-10 minutes later the user logon
screen appears. From this point on everything is fine.
No error messages or anything. I have scanned for
spyware and viruses and nothing was found. i have
defragmented my harddrive and used HDtune to check its
health and its fine. I have tried starting up in
safemode and that seems to startup perfectly within a
minute. I have no clue whats happeneing and AM DESPARATE
for some assistance. Someone please offer me a
solution. Thankyou.

Mario, if you have any CD's in the drives remove them before starting
up. See if that speeds it up any.

Try removing your USB hub, if you have one connected...

Then re-install the drivers for your USB hub to standard Microsoft ones
instead of USB 2.0 or other. hub will still work at usb2.0 speed but with
generic drivers.

Hope this helps

There is no DOS in the Windows XP startup. The text you see on the
screen prior to the Windows XP Startup Logo is from your computers
BIOS doing the Power On Self Test (POST).

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the Startup tab. Compare the
list of items that are loading at startup with the following checklist
web sites to see what can be safely dispensed with:

http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Uncheck.htm
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm
http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html - has trojan related
items listed

Then go to http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm and check
out the items listed in the Services tab of MSCONFIG.

Good luck
