Windows XP Sounds themes stopped working

I recently ran an IBM Software update to my laptop and since then, my windows
xp sound themes stopped working. I can get sounds from all other means
except for the windows sounds.

creating a new theme with no results.

Yes, the sounds work everywhere else except for the normal windows theme
sounds.
