Helpful Information

Setup has detected that some hardware or programs on your
computer might not function correctly after the upgrade is
completed. This lack of functionality can have an effect
on things you might want to do, such as connecting to the
Internet, accessing e-mail, printing, scanning, and
playing sounds or music. It is important that you read and
understand this upgrade report before continuing. To
resolve some of these issues, you can get more information

Mainman: Big ouch. I just want to ask a basic question: Is this pc back to your old Win98 ? or is it stuck "installing" XP?

Your log shows any number of flagged items. Did you address them "before" the XP "upgrade" install?
Which btw --- you have a retail XP Upgrade edition?

I just went through the same thing. In order to get rid of some problematic
registry references to obsolete drivers that were making XP stumble on new
software installations. I did a reinstall of the upgrade. It hung up 13
minutes from completion and got stuck in the install routine. It wouldn't go
forward nor back. Despite on-screen assurances beforehand that my data would
be saved, everything on the drive was lost. I had to boot with my old Win 95
floppy and then hit the drive with Killdisk and then do a clean install of
XP. I anticipated trouble because of the nature of XP and I did a full
backup beforehand so I'm not totally screwed. Still some old passwords from
my previous installation of Win 2000 years ago are coming back to haunt me,
thus proving my theory that formatting a disk that has XP or Win 2000 on it
doesn't really wipe the hard drive completely clean. I expect XP will always
present problems and that it is just not capable of straightening out its
own deficiencies even with a clean install after formatting. Best of luck,
we haven't really progressed much beyond the days of DOS. The big
inconvenience for me has been the time spent validating licensing after
reinstalling all the software. All the paranoia over bootlegging, you know.
I was lucky, it took me only three days to get back up and running with
everything installed.

And one last thought, don't forget the time to download 65 megabytes of
patches from Microsoft's web site.

Hey Main Man:

I think you need to wipe your harddrive and do a "clean" install. XP
uses the NTFS file system, and win98 uses Fat32, I would unhook any
devices I.E Printer, web cam, etc etc, and after installing win xp,
with the NTFS file system, go to the printer manufacturers website,
and download the win XP drivers, IF they have any, If they don't then
you might have to buy a new printer or webcam etc. I had to replace my
Kensington webcam, because they said the electronics inside the camera
made it impossible for them to make Win XP drivers for it. I also had
to buy a lot of new programs, Norton anti-virus 2002 won't work in XP,
you have to have 2003 or newer. I believe that the programs you
currently have on your win 98, are also causing xp to give you this
error code. Back up any important files before wiping your harddrive.
Check to see If your programs are compatible with win XP, BEFORE
installing them. I hope this helps you, I'm no expert, but have been
building systems for a while. Laterz, Len P

Just a note here: XP can use both NTFS *and* FAT32 (and FAT16 and
FAT12 for floppies). The file system is not the problem here.
