While installing Windows XP Home edition (over my 98-1st
edition) .... the installation stops about half way
through and I get a "Fatal Error" msg. d:/i386/asms data
error check.

System will not install.

Suggestions?

1) Do a clean install. Back up your data, put in the XP cd, format the
drive, and install Windows. If you still have problems, then you
probably have hardware issues - check the RAM and then the hard drive
for errors.

the file referenced indicates that it is likely a problem with reading
the CD, assuming that drive D: is your CDROM drive.

Try cleaning the CD with warm water and the drying it with a soft
cloth. Make absolutely certain that no fingermarks get onto the
bottom (shiny) surface of the CD - hold it only by the edges or by the
center alignment hole.

Good luck
