I HAVE AN HP PAVILION 511n. I AM ATTEMPTING TO RESTORE XP HOME EDITION. WHEN
POWER ON THE PC IT BEGINS TO BOOT OK THEN IT ENTERS A LIGHT BLUE SCREEN AND
SAY PLEASE WAIT WHILE WINDOWS RESTARTS..... THEN IT PROCEEDS TO THE
INSTALLATION SCREEN. IT IS AT THE SECTION INSTALL WINDOWS, THEN A WINDOW
POPS UP AND SAY PLEASE INSERT CD LABLED WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION SP1 INTO
CD-ROM AND PRESS OK. WHEN I DO THIS I GET A FATAL ERROR WITH THIS CODE:
SXS.DLL:SYNTAX ERROR IN MANIFEST OR POLICY FILE
D:\I386\ASMS\1000\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.MAN ON LINE 4. I CAN NOT
FIGURE OUT WHAT THIS MEANS OR HOW TO MAKE IT STOP SO I CAN START THE
RE-INSTALL OVER OR DO A FULL FORMAT RE-INSTALL.

OMG! What is with the all caps?

Does your newspaper come in all capital letters?
How many web pages do you visit that use all capital letters?
Brochures? Pamphlets? Magazines? Your non-spam Mail/Email?

Please - in the future - try to use a mix of characters in a standard way.
It is easier to read and there are some here who would akin your all capital
letter usage to walking into a room and screaming everything you had to
say... even if the person you are speaking to is sitting next to you and
there is no other sounds in the entire room.

It sounds like either your CD is defective or the CD drive is defective.
Get a CD drive cleaning kit - clean the cd drive.
Clean the CD with a static free cloth and non-abrasive cleaner.
Check for scratches/gouges in the CD.
