Windows XP and Norton SystemWorks 2004 conflict?

I use Windows XP on a laptop. Trying to install Norton SystemWorks 2004 but
although Norton seems to have installed, when I click on icon on desktop
program appears briefly and then disappears without displaying an error
message or further instructions.

Went on Microsoft support website and downloaded troubleshooting advice, one
which was to remove a conflicting Windows registry entry for AuditInProgress.
However, same thing happened when trying to delete the file as suggested and
although regedit won't stay open long enough for me to check properly, I
can't see the file AuditInProgress in 'Current Version' folder as Microsoft
indicated it should be.

Has anybody else experienced similar problems? I've tried uninstalling
Norton and reinstalling, but same happens each time and can't find any other
advice on Microsoft website.
