Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that
helps you get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system
in order to use Windows Update.

I am unable to scan, download critical updates or access
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com. In Help and Support,scan
the network looking for another OS. The only OS Windows
XP SP1. In Help and Support found 1st paragraph with
no error information. I have restored computer back to
last time computer was updated. As of 17 Aug 03 10:52pm

I've had the same problem for days. No in here knows
anything about it all though a lot of people are having
the same problem. I suggest checking back here until one
of the "experts" come up with what MS did to screw up the
UPDATE site. It almost seems like the blocked a lot of IP
addresses from accessing the site accidentally.
Good Luck and if you find the answer POST IT.......

Magii,
Yes I use TCP/IP. I found this fix on this site
Find the file called hosts (In XP Pro its located at
c:\windows\system32\drivers). Open it up in Notepad and
add this
line:
208.172.32.132 download.windowsupdate.com
Save and close.
This worked for me but someone else said its a spam entry.
Don't know but do know it works.
Thanks,
Brent
Try the update process again.

This is a workaround, but not a good fix for the problem. The MS URL's
change frequently and this fix will break the next time they are changed
leaving you with the same issues. There are rumors that some ISP's are
blocking download.windowsupdate.com. This could be causing some of the
problems.

I am using Norton Internet Security 2003. Microsoft
Windows Update Troubleshooter suggest to remove third
party firewall. Norton's firewall protects my computer
from all attacks, port intrusions, etc. How do I safety
disable Windows XP built-in firewall and will Windows
update work? Note: Both Norton and Windows firewalls are
set medium...Magii
