X-Post to WinME General
This thread so far:
http://snipurl.com/dipk. OP (Home User) has additional
problems (see
http://snipurl.com/dip8) and is running IE v6.0.2800.1106IC.
[IC = Internet Content-customized version of IE, most likely obtained from
your ISP, Home User.]
Home User, I don't know how you ended up with it but your replies suggest
that you now have what the WinME Pros call 'version soup'. There would be a
long list of items in IE Help > About > Update Versions (e.g., SP1; q123456;
q789012; q345678; &c.) if all was well, and the problem about which you
first posted here is only a symptom of this larger problem.
MVP Noel Paton has an excellent page containing instructions on making
things right:
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm. And IIRC
someone else in WinME General newsgroup had another effective way to do it,
too.
I'll leave you in their able hands: Post all further replies to WinME
General newsgroup, please. Yours is a Windows problem, not an IE problem
per se.
OT for Noel: FreeSpirit is now haunting WinXP New Users!

No, I do not boot with another Windows version.
There is no entry named "Outlook Express - Q..." Just an entry for
Outlook Express 6.
The only "Q" entry is for Windows Millennium Edition Q823559 Update.
Update Versions:;SP1;
This is a customized version of Internet Explorer.
Other problems I am experiencing: An issue with a web page that won't
load, while all others will. And, Windows Update asks me to install an
update for NET framework. I have ignored that.

"Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1478" tells us that you
have a later OE Update installed which supersedes KB837009/MS04-013.
Do you dual boot with another Windows version by any chance?
Look in Add/Remove Programs for an entry named 'Outlook Express - Q[six
numerals]'. What do you find?
IE Help > About > Update Versions: Post everything listed here, please.
Other than this bothersome announcement from WinUp, are you
experiencing any OE, IE or Windows problems? Could you learn to ignore
the bothersome announcement?

Hi; Yes, I am using the same machine. I have owned it for about five
years, and I do not recall reinstalling Windows.
I have, however, installed, uninstalled and reinstalled a lot of other
software over the years. I hope that isn't an issue... I hope my
system hasn't gone completely buggy!
Are you posting from the problem machine ("Newsreader: Microsoft
Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1478")?
Have you ever reinstalled WinME after having first installed IE6?

Through the Microsoft Windows Update web site, I have repeatedly
ran the update for Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express
6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009).
It appears to be successful, but then on my next visit to the
site, it asks me to install it again.
According to my history, I've had about a dozen successful
installations over the last week. Why aren't they working? Am I
vulnerable to a security risk?
