Windows Update problem

Dean

New Notebook Pentium 4 3.06 GHz Windows XP. I have used
Windows UPDATE to install all critical updates plus a
number of recommended ones. All OK until I got to
KB828026 ("Critical update for Windows Media Player
Script Commands"). This downloads OK but at the
installation proceeds only 3 bars and then a message
comes up that Installation was successful. Each time I
have accessed Windows Updates since, it lists the same
critical update requiring installation. In "Installation
History" it is now listed as being "Successful" 4 times.
1. How do I stop it being displayed as Critical update
needing installation?
2. Or is W Update really telling me it is not
successfully installed! If the latter what do I do now
please?

I don't know whether it is relevant but just before
KB828026, I installed "Security Update for Windows XP"
KB828038. Installation failed twice but was successful
at the third attempt.

Hi Dean,

Control Panel/Add & Remove, if it is listed uninstall 828026. Then download
the stand alone version from this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...5E-0C55-452E-A0FA-3AA165E667C1&displaylang=en

Do not run it from the download site, just download the file. Once the
download is complete, double-click it to install the update. This should
prevent the prompts from reoccuring.

Thanks Rick it worked OK. A bit hairy in the Uninstall
phase when a message came up stating that a long list of
Applications may not work properly if I proceeded. Took
the plunge and I hope none are affected.

Hi,

No, they shouldn't be. That cryptic warning is a bit of overkill.
