Windows Update repetition

New Notebook 3.06MHz Pentium 4 CPU Windows XP Home set to
automatically download Critical Windows Updates but ask
to Install. I have installed "Critical Update for Windows
Media Player Script Commands KB828026 12 times now and
always get the Message Installation successful.
Nevertheless whenever I boot up I get the message
Critical Windows updates ready to install and it is
always the same one, sometimes another as well. How can
I stop getting this repeat message for this particular
update?

JUPITER;

TRIED YOUR SUGGESTION several times but could not
uninstall Windows Media Player Hotfix 828026. EVEN
Though WINDOWS media Player was not running I always get
the message "Q828026 Access Denied" Prior to this got a
message indicating removal may affect a long list of
items. Accepted yes to continue but soon after
the "access denied" message was displayed. One of these
was Windows Media Player Hotfix KB 837272

I did reboot each time before trying again.
Any suggestions???

Try it in Safe Mode:
Reboot tapping F8 each second
Select Safe Mode at the menu
Select "Administrator"

Hi Jupiter

I tied the Safe Mode suggestion following it to the
letter but it still came up with 'Access Denied'.

I then went to the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article for
828026 and on page 4 of this it mentioned that
Administrators could use Spuninst.exe but gave no
details. I am not an administrator but did a search for
this file and eventually found it amongst the hidden
system files. In fact there were 24 of them! Examined
them all and sure enough the very last one was relevant
to 828026. With much fear and trepidation I double
clicked on it and after negotiating the steps as before
it eventually removed the troublesome 828026 without
Access Denied this time. I then followed your 828026 DTS-
LOrg article in full and now everything is OK. Couldn't
have done it without your input Jupiter - many thanks. I
have checked Windows Update 3 times since and I don't get
any Critical updates. Also the icon on the Taskbar does
not give me that message every time I boot up re Critical
updates downloaded ready to be installed. What a
relief! Thanks AGAIN.
