A critical update that keeps wanting to install

R

Rob

I keep getting notified that I need the critical
update "Critical Update for Windows Media Player Script
Commands (KB828026)". I have installed this update more
than ten time in the last month. Whats going on?

Patti,

I have been working on this same problem on the windowsxp.basic News Group
with no success. Unfortunately, the information provided here also did not
help.

What has worked for some people is to remove the update using Add/Remove
Programs in the Control panel. Then download the update patch directly
from the download center and install it manually.

Well, I posted a reply last night but I don't see it here so I will repost.

Patti,

I have been working on this same problem on the windowsxp.basic News Group
with no success. Unfortunately, the information provided here also did not
help. I have downloaded the file manually and when I unzip it, I get and
error message "EXTRACTION FAILED" and a message saying "Access Denied." By
the way, the Update was not in my Add/Remove items any more after I removed
it the first time.

Tom;
Have you disabled ALL unnecessary applications including ALL
components of antivirus, download accelerators, anti spy applications
etc?
These type of applications produce the type of problems you mention.

SUCCESS! I finally booted up in Safe mode, logged in as administrator, and
everything went fine. Go figger.

What a pain in the ass though. How are non-techies and people like my
Grandparents supposed to use a computer when it's this difficult?
