Windows Uodate will not install chosen files

Ritter197

I have used Windows Update for years, both in the Express, Automatic and
Manual selection.

To-nite I chose 4 security updates:

KB873339,
KB885835
KB886185
KB885836

I tried it under automatic and manual, but at the end it always said that
these 4 updates were NOT installed.

Any ideas?

I looked in Explorer and under Search.

I do not have such a file. I am using windowsxp pro.

I have not updated them yet. I have Win2K SP4. I tried searching for
them on the Microsoft site and they are nowhere to be found. What's up
with that? I did some googling and found your post.

Hi,

Sure you do, it's just that it is a system file, and you are not set to view
them. Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options, and on the View tab, set the
options so you can see hidden and system files. Specifically:

Enable (check) "Display the contents of system folders"
Enable (check) "Show hidden files and folders"
Disable (uncheck): "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)"

I also recommend that you disable (uncheck) "hide extensions for known file
types".

Alternately, to see the log, click start/run and type:

%windir%\windows update.log

and click ok to open it in notepad.

Hi

Most likely the user is running WU v5, where there is no space in
the log file name:

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Oh, many thanks Torgeir, hadn't realized the change.

I have the same problem, on 2 out of 3 computers.
1 computer (XP Pro SP1) successfully updated.
2 computers (XP Pro SP1 and XP Home SP1) didn't seem to download the updates
after I selected them for download. (Or maybe they downloaded but didn't
prompt me to install them.)
Automatic Updates is set to Prompt before downloading on all computers.
Windows Update web site says the updates haven't been installed.
The updates are:
KB873339
KB885835
KB885836

I've looked at WindowsUpdate.log but I didn't see anything that obviously
looked like an error message. There were a couple of "WU client calls back to
[something] with code Call complete and error 0" but there are hundreds of
those throughout the log file.

I have previously installed quite a few updates on all 3 of these computers
with the same AU settings.

More info:
I installed those 3 security updates by going to the Windows Update web
site. But something funny happened - As soon as it finished downloading the
updates, the Automatic Updates icon popped up saying that updates were ready
to install! (I cancelled that and continued installing from the web site.) So
it seems that the Automatic Update wasn't able to download the updates for
some reason.

I finally fixed my problem the hard way.

I re-installed windows xp pro from scratch and NOW it takes all updates.

Strange, is it not?
