<windows root> )system32)hal.dll.... when i try to log onto my computer all i get is a black screen adn this error. i have used every cd and all the downloaded cd's but nothing helps. i can not log onto anything else....please help

Boot using the XP CD, and press R to go to the recovery console. It
will ask which Windows installation you want to repair and will ask
for the password used during installation of XP.
When you get the command prompt:
bootcfg /list will show the list in boot.ini
bootcfg /rebuild will fix it.
