windows root system32 hal.dll

when the computer start there is a black screen and in dos it says to
reinstall the windows root>\system32\hal.dll and it appears that this problem
has only arisen since down loading the updates from Microsoft.

I cannot get restore points. If someone could help in layman's terms it
would be appreciated....

If you haven't solved your probem yet. I had the same situation and read your
replys. solved my problem with "chkdsk" Microsoft says "ckkdsk /p and if
errors are found then "chkdsk /r.
