Suggestions and Checkpoints:

Go to Start/Run and type in: services.msc. Scroll down to: Windows
Management Instrumentation and make sure the Service is set to Automatic.

Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: net stop winmgmt. Then delete the
%windir&\system32\wbem\repository directory. Once done go back to
Start/Run/CMD and type in: net start winmgmt

If that doesn't help, try this:

Open a Command Prompt and type "winmgmt /clearadap" to clear prior
WMI/resyncperf information from the registry.
Then type "winmgmt /resyncperf" to register the system performance libraries
with WMI again.]]

I tried your first suggestion and came up with this error
message

The windows management intrumentation could not be started

A system error has occurred.
system error 193 has occured.
*** is not a valid win32 application.

I then tried your second suggestion but it appeares to
have made no difference.

Also, when I try to start WMI in services I get the
following error message

Could not start the Windows Management Instrumentation
service on local computer.
error 193: 0xc1

Hope this info helps

I greatly appreciated your time

I've heard from various sources that this problem is either:
A. Some esoteric problem with WFP (Windows File Protection). If so, you
could try going to a Command Prompt and typing:

sfc /scannow

B. A virus, in which case you should have a good anti-virus app on hand and
run a thorough scan on your system with it.

Either of these answers are suspect though, since I've not dealt directly
with anyone handling this issue.]]

Good news Wes

I tried a procedure from Kellys Korner and when I tried
to register winmgmt I got the following error message

The application or dll c:\windows\system32
\wbem\wmisvc.dll is not a valid windows image.
Please check this against your installion diskette.

I renamed the above file .old and windows file protection
found a problem and re-installed a correct (previous)
version.

So far (touch wood) everything appears to be working.
WMI process starts, and other gremlins like taking 20
minutes to create a system restore point, now 20 seconds,
are gone.

Once again thank you very much for time and support

Regards Axley
