Windows mail: only sends messages next time program initiated

Windows mails sends messages ONLY when I first open the program, even when
the option "send messages immediately" is checked. Under tools, the sending
option simply doesn't work. In order to send a mail I have to completely
close the Windows mail and then reopen the program, or even, sometime,
restart the computer and then reopen the program. THEN and only then will it
send the the messages in the outbox.
How can I fix this?

This is sometimes due to interference from antivirus programs. What if any
antivirus programs do you have, and have you ever had a Norton or McAfee
antivirus program on that computer, even one of the free trial versions that
often come already installed on new computers?

Also, after you get it to send messages, click on the Outbox, then View,
then
Current View, then Show All Messages. Does this make any more messages
appear? If so, click on them and make sure all of them will open with no
error messages.

Many thanks for this. Yes, I am using Norton and suspect that this is the
problem, since the message DO go out immediately once the program is
restarted.

I saw one your other helpful posts on this subject, and wonder: what
antivirus programs ARE compatible with Windows Mail? Can you help on this?

Of the free antivirus programs, the ones that are compatible
with Windows Mail are:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

However, with either of those, during the install phase you must select
'custom' install, and then deselect the email scanning module so it won't install.

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus.
