Windows mail and sky - About to throw pC out the window!

Stevie

I have been trying to get sky to work with outlook, windows mail and now
windows live mail. I have looked at all the advice given in various chats and
cannot find any solution. The error now reads -

Unable to send or receive messages for the pop.tools.sky.com account. An
incorrect password was entered. The next time you send or receive messages,
you'll be asked to enter your user name and password for this account.

Server Error: 0x800CCC90

Server: 'pop.tools.sky.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC92
Protocol: POP3
Port: 995
Secure(SSL): Yes

Can anybody help? Have tried sky online and phone desk help advice with no
joy!

That type of problem is usually caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Note: This newsgroup is dedicated to the Windows Mail program.
In the future, please post to the Windows Live Mail newsgroup:

S

Gary, I had Norton so uninstalled and replaced with avast. I have turned of
the email scanning in avast but this makes no difference. I also tried
windows mail and windows live mail with no antivirus installed at all, but
this made no difference either.

Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are NOT the same application, the former
is built into Vista, the later WLM you downloaded from the Internet.

If you are sure that the account set up is correct, then remove and rebuild
the account again, with a restart of WLM in between.

Also see the other reply for why this problem occurs?

Thanks Mac. I appreciate the difference, however I started of with WM and
then changed it to WLM because of other posted advice suggesting that this
might help.
Have tried all your advice but to no avail I'm afraid.

Any uninstall of Norton must be followed up with their special
removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Also, your AVG antivirus was probably installed with its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

Just found this post in the WLM newsgroup (thanks Noel).

I assume you've checked that the username and password are correct
by logging on to your mail account online. Is the account locked at
sky.com? From what I can tell at
http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skyc...2c1e-46e0-a18a-6e77105a8f05&articleId=3575210
this is a possibility. It says there
<quote>
1. Close your email client application.
2. From the computer on which the POP logins are failing (that is,
the one on which you are constantly being prompted to enter your
password), visit www.sky.com/unlock.
3. Enter your email username and password, and the letters in the
distorted picture.
4. Once you have successfully logged in, restart your email program
and try to send/receive your mail.

OK, ensure that at the server tab of your account that Outgoing server

Never used Sky, so not sure about this, but Yahoo and gmail need POP to be

at the options to see if Sky operate the same way.
