Windows Live Mail Beta - anyone using this?

Gary - I see "Windows Live Mail desktop" everywhere. On my desktop/toolbar
icons, in Control Panel, in Help, on the page that opens when I click my DT
icon, as part of the MS logo, in the thank you letter (from which the extract
came), plus about a dozen other places.
And when I go into Help>About Microsoft Live Mail desktop, I see - "Windows
Live Mail desktop version 80.1226".
Also, a correction to my previous - It was WLHotmail (not WLM) that I had
before and despised so. Am I sane? Wayne

Gary - After doing a Google search, I have to concede that your vers. # and
mine are both WLM #s, and it was released on May 31. So why in Hell does mine
have "desktop" plastered all over the place?
To Gene, If you haven't done so already, go for WLM, as it is the latest.
And please let me know what yours says. Phew! What a day. Thanks, Wayne

A problem or a program when it is released?

:
: Yes. There are some "fit and finish" issues that MS is working on now.
: There's a long list of bugs - but there is still a long list of bugs in
OE,
: even after a decade or so of complaints from us users. The WLM team now
: seems to be focusing on our gripes and suggestions and I have hopes that
WLM
: will be a very good problem by the time it is officially released. At
: least, I've had no "messages stuck in the Outbox" with WLM. ;<)

all mail in my existing WM folders were MOVED to WLM,
including LOCAL folder containing saved mail.
the data was removed from the WM folders.

"tried it for about 4 hours. found it totally MOVED all data from WM setup to
WLM setup, messages and all accounts"

mikeyhsd - Which Email are you talking about? There are about 5 under
discussion.

A correction to my previous post. Not all my mail made the switch. Some did,
some didn't. But it's all safe and sound in my old WM, so it really doesn't
matter. Thanks, Wayne

Hi, Ron.

Did I say THAT? ;^}

No, I don't think it was Freudian.

Thanks for the correction.

Hi, Wayne.

As I said, the naming confusion is all Microsoft's doing - and we're all
stuck with it.

In the confusion, I made a slight misstatement, too. I said, "I resisted
anything with 'Live' in the name until May 31, when WLM beta became
available." But that's not quite true. I did download and use WLMd
(8.0.1226) for just a few days before WLM (12.0.1184 - which I'm using now)
appeared.

That few days complicated my week-later migration from WM to WLM. When I
installed WLMd, it imported my old messages from WM - imperfectly. :>( But
I've learned to set my mail programs to "leave messages on the server" for
several days, especially during these transition periods. And I continued
to run WM every day, too, so when WLM arrived, I was able to Import directly
to WLM from WM, rather than from the WLMd "middleman". (I specify my own
location for the Message Store, rather than use the default, and created a
separate store for each of the mail client versions. When this transition
is complete and the dust settles, I'll delete all but the one that will
become permanent.)

I think you mean version 8.0.1226. That is indeed the older Windows Live Mail Desktop.

If you are located outside of the US, the download URL may be redirecting to
that older version. Try this direct URL:

Gary - You're right. I have "8.0.1226". And I live in Ont. Canada.
Guess we're behind the times here.
For a while I thought I had a rare mistake (like a misspelled Beatles
record) and then you tell me I really do have WLMDB. Story of my life. I do
like it though.
Is WLM worth the upgrade? And what is "on this computer" in lower left
corner, if anyone has the time?

R.C White, Gary - Thank you both for your time. I've just downloaded WLM and
all traces of "desktop" are gone. Took 5 minutes.
WLM doesn't have "on this computer", so I may never know what it was.
One thing missing is desktop icon. This was a second download with WLMD, but
I wasn't given the option just now. How do I put it on DT? Thanks, Wayne

When my back was turned the icon (the ugly generic IE one) appeared as if by
magic. My Email probs seem to be over. Please say MS is not coming out with a
new one anytime soon. Thanks, everyone.

I'm using it.

I think it's better than "Windows Mail"

I'd rather have Outlook Express though.

The confusing "on this computer" designation is now named Storage Folders
in the new WLM. You can add custom folders there for archiving mail.

Mine was copied and not removed from WinMail.
