Windows Live Mail Beta - anyone using this?

G

Gene

I'm "thinking" ~ downloading and installing the new Microsoft
Windows Live Mail beta:
http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas

Questions:
1. Will it COMPLETELY REPLACE my most crummy Vista Windows Mail?
2. Have you actually downloaded and "tried it" and are currently running it
as a
replacement for Vista WinMail?
3. Do you Like it?
Dislike it?
Wish you had stayed with Vista WinMail?

As for me, I wish I had my old PC back, with XP Pro & Outlook :-(

THANKS!
Gene

-- Gene, What you want is "Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta", an improvement
to the one you mentioned.
1. Takes 20 min to set up.
2. Is one click from Desktop or tray.
3. Never requires name or password.
4. Holds many Email accounts including Hotmail, but without the ads.
5. Has many features that I'm slill discovering.
6. So far it's perfect. Make sure it's "Desktop". Wayne

THANKS, Wayne!

Did you "keep" your Vista Windows Mail, and continue to use
it as your primary email client?

Other than the normal "unable to delete from the Inbox problem",
the only other problem that I have with Vista Windows Mail is that
I am unable to SEND an email to a Craig's List post by clicking
on the email link on any craigslist.org www page.

So I'm hoping that the Desktop you mentioned totally "replaces"
Vista Windows Mail. Does Desktop use Windows Mail to send email,
or does it have a totally "new" mail client built into Desktop that is
compatible
with Vista?

I really just want ONE email client, preferably not my current
Vista Windows Mail :-(

THANKS,
Gene

Gene, You will not need WM as WLMDbeta replaces it and you keep your address.

Everything is tranfered to the new one - contacts etc. When I left WM, I
left all its glitches behind, including an error message. Try it, you'll like
it. Wayne

For all practical purposes, yes. It removes the Windows Mail shortcuts,
but leaves the actual WM program in place, should you ever have a need
to go back to it.
2. Have you actually downloaded and "tried it" and are currently running it as a
replacement for Vista WinMail?

Yes, since May 31.
3. Do you Like it?

Wish you had stayed with Vista WinMail?

All programs have good points and bad points.
So far WLM has been far less troublesome than WM was.

OK, I'll backup to a spare USB HD and to DVDs as well - good excuse
to backup everything - then download the beta and give it a go...

Looks like everyone is pointing to this URL to
download a free beta copy?
http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas

This is the correct (current) URL, right?

Thanks again,
Gene

Yes, that is the correct URL.

Yes, that's the correct URL. Gary has a tendency towards understatement,
whereas I cannot say enough about WLMDB. Of course I have had very bad luck
with all Emails before this one. Thanks again Gary. Wayne

Email clients or software capable of retrieving msn.com or hotmail.com
email(pop3 or http)accounts since 1995.
1. Exchange
2. Internet Mail and News
3. Windows Messaging which was an update and rename of #1 to avoid confusion
with the corporate Exchange Server
4. Outlook Express
5. Msn Explorer
6. Hotmail
7. Outlook
8. Windows Live Mail Beta
- which had a Live and Classic interface and the ability to revert the
account back to #6 interface
9. Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta
10. Windows Mail(Vista)
11. Windows Live Hotmail which merged #6 and #8
12. Windows Live Mail beta which was #9 until #11 occurred

Today depending upon the type of account(fee or free) numbers 4, 5, 7, 10,
11, and 12 still function.

Gene, in this list it would appear that WLMDB (#9) predates WM whereas I
thought it was the latest version. I suspect this list is out of order. If
you look it also says that #9 no longer functions, but I just downloaded it 2
days ago, so this list is not accurate. Can someone confirm this list? Wayne

1. It will not uninstall WinMail but it will copy over all of the WinMail
accounts and messages. It certainly does not replace WinMail for me. It
clutters itself up with RSS feeds, which I finally removed. It also lacks
the ability to customize the toolbar.
2. I've tried it and don't like it, but use it to read and delete my Hotmail
because the Web interface is even worse.
3. I strongly dislike it and use WinMail as my main email program instead of
Windows Live Mail. They can coexist on the same machine.

You can change them back by making WinMail the default again.
Yes, since May 31.

Not for me. Of course WLM hasn't caused problems either. I just don't like
it.

Thank you Frank. My use of "replace" did not imply "uninstall".
I too still have WM but it will be a cold day in Hell before I use it again.
My mail and contacts followed my switch to Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta,
and even were they to somehow not make it, they are still on WM.
As to RSS feeds I don't even know what they are. Unless they matter to poor
Gene (who must be totally confused by now) I say "go for it".
I tried Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, WM, WLHotmail, and had nightmares with them
all.

On WLMDB I only use my server Email address, and Hotmail is collecting dust.
It works perfectly for me (knock on wood). And I love one click. WM had
this also but also had problems. Thanks Wayne

tried it for about 4 hours. found it totally MOVED all data from WM setup to WLM setup, messages and all accounts.
found it basically hosed my system.
accounts came across, news groups did not.
had to resubscribed to all the groups in 9 different accounts. major pain to do catch up on all those. total of 190+ groups.

one mail problem I did not like was all unread mail is listed in ONE unread mail folder even though they really exist in their main storage folder.
deleting them from the all folder also deletes them from the main folder.

also one news problem that really bugged me and made me go back to WM was the inability to copy/move a news group message to a local folder for safe keeping. there is a clunky work around.

trying to go back to WM found that all my mail and news folders were empty, had to totally set up everything again.
only lost 2 out of 200 saved email message. but again had to set up news groups on 9 servers all 190+ groups.

it may work generally but for me not ready for prime time YET.

mikeyhsd - Which Email are you talking about? There are about 5 under
discussion.

A correction to my previous post. Not all my mail made the switch. Some did,
some didn't. But it's all safe and sound in my old WM, so it really doesn't
matter. Thanks, Wayne

Hi, Gene.

The confusion over the names of the several mail clients is Microsoft's
fault, of course. But in spite of Wayne's insistence on keeping the word
"desktop", Windows Live Mail beta IS the latest and current mail client for
Vista (although many WinXP users are running it, too). Windows Live Mail
desktop (beta) was replaced by WLM beta on May 31. WLMd is now dead, except
for those who haven't gotten the word yet. As you said in your OP, you can
read the official word and download the current WLM public beta at:
http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas

As to your specific questions, see inline...

Windows Live Mail beta:
http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas

Questions:
1. Will it COMPLETELY REPLACE my most crummy Vista Windows Mail?

Yes. I was mostly happy with WM, and I resisted anything with "Live" in the
name until May 31, when WLM beta became available.
2. Have you actually downloaded and "tried it" and are currently running
it as a
replacement for Vista WinMail?

Yes. That's what I've been running ever since about June 2. (I had a
serious problem with WLM's import of my message base at first and it took a
couple of days to get that fixed. Nobody else has reported such a problem,
so it must have been within my own database.)
3. Do you Like it?

Yes. There are some "fit and finish" issues that MS is working on now.
There's a long list of bugs - but there is still a long list of bugs in OE,
even after a decade or so of complaints from us users. The WLM team now
seems to be focusing on our gripes and suggestions and I have hopes that WLM
will be a very good problem by the time it is officially released. At
least, I've had no "messages stuck in the Outbox" with WLM. ;<)
Dislike it?

Dislike several things, but I haven't run WM in a couple of weeks, so I
guess that means something.
Wish you had stayed with Vista WinMail?

No. Not since the first week with WLM.
As for me, I wish I had my old PC back, with XP Pro & Outlook :-(

I've never been comfortable with Outlook. I'm one man with one computer and
no net but the Internet. So Outlook is too cumbersome for my simple needs.
Also, I spend far less time in email than in newsgroups, which Outlook
doesn't handle. Vista is much better than WinXP - and gets better as I get
over the hump in the learning curve. WinXP is still installed on my
computer, but I haven't booted it in months.
THANKS!
Gene

You're welcome. Come on in, the water's fine. Well, it will be fine, when
the Team finishes tweaking WLM for us.

R.C. White - Maybe I'm in a time warp, but your link is the exact same one I
downloaded 2 days ago. And when I look in the left hand corner by MS logo it
says "Windows Live Mail desktop beta" and I bet if Gene does the same he'll
see the same thing. That is why I insist on saying "desktop". Because that's
what Gary's URL link gave me. If someone can clarify this, thank you. Wayne

"Wayne L.Thanks again for using Windows Live Mail for the desktop.
Best, The Windows Live Mail Desktop team"

The above is the only text that would allow copying. Furthermore, it was WLM
that I had 3 days ago and couldn't use because of neverending probs. The
online WLM support didn't have a clue. So I went for WLMDB which I can't
have, because it was dead on May 31, but do have as of June 20. Wayne

Not sure where you are seeing this, Wayne. What counts is what you see
when you go to Show menu, Help, About Microsoft Windows Live Mail.
In that screen I see "Windows Live Mail version 12.0.1184".
No mention of desktop.
