Vista-Windows Mail vs Windows Live Mail

Vista/Windows Mail vs Windows Live Mail.

Are these one in the same or completely separate e-mail programs? I'm
confused.

I'm trying to use the Windows Mail that is in the Vista OS. Very
frustrated....TNX!

They are two separate email programs. What's causing all the frustration
with Vista - WM? That contacts thing you posted before? And what else?

Microsoft confuses intentionally, or at least they sure seem to do it
intentionally.

Outlook Express is different from Outlook. OE is not a subset of Outlook;
they are different but the name Outlook Express implies that OE is a subset
of Outlook. Windows Mail is a version of OE modified for Vista. Windows Live
Mail is a totally different program. My guess, and this is only a guess, is
that Windows Live Mail is written using .Net technology and Outlook Express,
including Windows Mail, is not.

Thanks for the info guys. My frustration....
1. Favorites......spread all over the place. Why couldn't they do it like
OE. It worked and would have saved man hours and $$$'s for re-creating
something that it looks like no one
really likes.
2. Contacts......again just leave it alone and bring the OE style of
contacts over. I too
separate people accordingly. I don't select everyone to send an e-mail to.

So that's why I wondered if Live Mail was more like OE ? If so I would
change.
In Live Mail are my messages stored on my hard drive as in OE or is on some
server someplace?

Thanks !

1. Favorites? There are no 'Favorites' in OE either.
That's an Internet Explorer thing.
2. Granted, the contacts handling in OE is more flexible than in
Windows Mail. Windows Live Mail contacts are a little more
flexible than in Windows Mail, but probably not to your liking.

Windows Live Mail can be used just like Windows Mail, with all
messages stored locally. The web enhancements in Windows Live
Mail are optional. The best way to find out what it is like is to try
it out. Installing it does not change the functioning of Windows Mail
in any way. I run both programs simultaneously.

A friend has just bought a new laptop with Win7 pre-installed. I
helped with setting up email accounts etc. As there was no email program
I set up Windows Live Mail. This has wiped out any access (if it still
exists) to his original MSN Hotmail account. I've set up the hotmail
account using same passwords etc. but ALL existing mails have vanished.
MVP.....please don't say 'go here' or 'go there' for answers....YOU
should provide them. I do think though that MS is trying to hide a major
'f...up' here with all these email problems. Vista revisited???

How did your friend access his Hotmail account before he got the new laptop?
If he used Live Hotmail (the webmail) then the messages should still be on
the server.
If he accessed the POP3 server, then they may have been downloaded to his
old computer and deleted from the server.

I don't understand your statement, "This has wiped out any access
(if it still exists) to his original MSN Hotmail account." How
exactly have you determined that? Did you go in your browser to
http://hotmail.com and accessed the account that way?

Have you set up his MSN Hotmail account in Windows Live Mail,
and if so, did it download any email messages?

The OP mentioned using Windows Live Mail. By default it will set up
a Hotmail account with HTTP rather than POP3 protocol. Even if he
had manually set it up as POP3, WLM by default does not delete mail
from the server.
